Comedy verse parody of Tom Cruise's Top Gun, with a father and son who are superfans of the film, marking its 40th anniversary.
Top Gunchained comes to Norwich Theatre Royal on Saturday 29 May and Sunday 30 May, two shows in the Playhouse. It's an unauthorised comedy parody that takes the characters, romance and action of Tom Cruise's Top Gun and drops them into the story of a father and son who are superfans of the film. It marks 40 years since the movie first hit cinemas, and it comes from the same creative team behind the global hit Yippee Ki Yay.
Richard Marsh wrote and performs the show, and he brings something to it that you won't find in most comedy: he's a fighter pilot himself. He's also a London poetry slam champion and a BBC Audio Drama Best Scripted Comedy Drama award-winner, and he uses that background to re-enact the film's signature dogfights alone on stage. The show is directed by Hal Chambers, with movement by Emma Webb.
Critics have described it as "affectionate and surprisingly touching" (The Stage) and "an aerodynamic comic verse blast" (Dominic Cavendish, Daily Telegraph). It runs 70 minutes with no interval, and it's recommended for ages 12+.
