Live chamber concert by The Great British Film Orchestra of the music from Tim Burton's films, with Danny Elfman, plus themes from Harry Potter, Casper and Psycho.
The Great British Film Orchestra bring their tour to The Halls on Wednesday 4 November, with two shows on the same night: one at 6.15pm and another at 8.30pm. It's a live chamber orchestra, and the set is built around the music of Tim Burton and Danny Elfman.
For anyone who knows Burton's films, Elfman is the sound you're thinking of. He wrote the scores for Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Batman (1989), Sleepy Hollow, Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas, so a good chunk of the night is dedicated to those. The orchestra takes those themes and plays them live, rather than relying on recordings.
But it doesn't stop with Burton. The programme reaches beyond his work and into the wider world of film and popular music, with themes from Harry Potter, Casper, Thriller, Pan's Labyrinth, The Sixth Sense and Psycho. It's a broad mix, pulling from different eras and styles, and it's all delivered by the same live ensemble.

There's a visual side to it too: the performance includes bright flashing lights and Portman lighting effects, so it's not just a seated concert. The Great British Film Orchestra is one of the UK's premier ensembles dedicated to film music, and this is one stop on their UK-wide tour. The two showtimes on the night — 6.15pm and 8.30pm — give you a choice of when to head in.
