Satirical sci-fi comedy in which Rosie Holt and her MP alter-ego fight the government's response to aliens arriving to abduct the British public.
Rosie Holt brings The Illegal Aliens Have Landed! to the Norwich Theatre Playhouse on Sunday 22 November, a sci-fi streaked satire that puts her and her MP alter-ego back on stage to take on their biggest foe yet. The premise is straightforward: aliens arrive to abduct and eat the British public, and the government's response to that is the show's target. It's a political comedy that uses a space-invasion setup to get at the state of things closer to home.
It's a show that's already picked up plenty of critical attention, with notices in The Times, The Observer, Time Out, The Evening Standard, The Guardian and The Telegraph. If you're familiar with Holt's work, you'll know she often blends the personal with the political, and this one leans into that with the MP character as a central part of the act.
The venue is the Playhouse, the intimate 300-seat riverside room that's a short walk from the Theatre Royal. It's housed in what was once a nineteenth-century maltings building and celebrated its 25th anniversary as a theatre in 2020; it's now regarded as one of the best fringe venues in the country, and it's home to the Playhouse Bar. The smaller room suits this kind of comedy well, keeping things close and focused.
