Live show by the psychedelic five-piece Pigeon, with their debut album OUTTANATIONAL, at the Norwich Arts Centre.
Pigeon play Norwich Arts Centre on Saturday 30 January, their first Norwich date since their debut album OUTTANATIONAL came out. They're a psychedelic five-piece from Margate, and the set will be built around that record.
OUTTANATIONAL is a collection of party songs without limits, described as William Onyeabor in outer space or early Hot Chip making motorik afrobeat in a 70s New York loft. It's a long way from the seaside town they started in, and it's the album they're touring. Before this, they'd been putting out a string of EPs that got playlisted on 6Music and landed them slots at UK festivals, including Glastonbury. Since then, their sound has shifted away from afro-disco and into something moodier, with krautrock, post-punk and punk-funk working their way in.
They describe their guiding principles as cosmic exploration, spiritual transformation and unbridled spontaneity, and that's a fair place to start when you're trying to pin down what they actually sound like. The afrobeat influence is still there, but it's now sitting alongside a heavier, more angular edge. It's a five-piece band, so there's plenty of room for those different threads to run together on stage.
