DJ set by Grant Marshall, better known as Daddy G, founding member of Massive Attack and trip hop pioneer.
Daddy G is playing a DJ set at Norwich Arts Centre on Saturday 14 November, starting at 8:30pm. If the name doesn't ring a bell, the full billing usually lists him as Daddy G (The Wild Bunch / Massive Attack), and that's where the context lies: Grant Marshall, better known as Daddy G, is one of the founding fathers of trip hop, the Bristol sound that emerged in the 1990s alongside Massive Attack, Tricky and Portishead.
His story starts well before that. In 1982 he teamed up with Miles Johnson and Nellee Hooper to form The Wild Bunch sound system, a name that made its mark on the warehouse and free party scene and built a following around its residency at The Dugout Club in Bristol. In 1988 he co-founded Massive Attack with fellow Bristol producers Smith & Mighty, and their 1991 debut Blue Lines became a household name, with Daddy G on vocals, guitar, keyboards and producing. The band later won Best Album for Mezzanine at the 1998 MTV Awards and Best Dance Act at the Brit Awards, and Teardrop took Best Video at the 1998 MTV Awards.
Beyond the music, he's narrated Five Man Army, made the film Ring The Alarm with Don Letts, presented DJ Kicks for BBC 6Music and produced the 2016 documentary marking the 25th anniversary of Blue Lines. This is a DJ set, so it's the decks rather than the band on the night.
