Free, drop-in creative session open to all ages to share words, memories or feelings about the River Wensum and create a community poem.
The People's Poem for Wensum is a free, drop-in creative session at The Lions' Den on Wednesday 28 October, from 4.00pm to 7.00pm. It's open to all ages, and you don't need to book a place or have any previous writing experience to take part. The whole point is to get as many people as possible to contribute, so you can just turn up when it suits you during that window.
If you do come along, you're invited to share a word, a memory, a favourite place, or a feeling about the River Wensum. Every contribution helps shape a new community poem, so whether you've got a specific story about the river or just a single word that comes to mind, it all goes into the mix. The resulting poem is meant to celebrate the rights of the river and highlight how the waterway, which flows through the heart of the city, shapes Norwich's communities, environment and sense of place.
The session is commissioned by the National Centre for Writing as part of Norwich UNESCO City of Literature. It also sits within Where the River Meets Us, a festival delivered by Norwich City Council and programmed by the National Centre for Writing. That gives the whole thing a bit of context: it's part of a wider city-wide focus on the Wensum, rather than just a one-off afternoon.

So, if you've got a connection to the river — or even if you just fancy spending an hour or two contributing to something collective — it's a low-pressure way to get involved. The Lions' Den is at 79 Bishopgate, Norwich NR1 4AA, and the session runs from 4.00pm to 7.00pm on Wednesday 28 October. It's free to attend.
