Power-pop and garage rock night headlined by Kelley Stoltz, with Tracy Bryant and molto morbidi at The Holloway.
Kelley Stoltz plays The Holloway on Tuesday 20 October, with molto morbidi and Tracy Bryant on the bill. Stoltz is an American songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and DIY innovator whose recording career goes back to the late 1990s, when he started tracking psych-tinged pop and garage rock in his San Francisco home studio. Born in New York City in 1971 and raised in Michigan, he's put out a substantial catalogue on labels including Sub Pop, Third Man and Castle Face Records, often playing all the instruments himself. His work draws comparisons to the melodic craftsmanship of 1960s pop auteurs and the quirkiness of 1980s power-pop and new wave. He's a long-time favourite of MOJO, Brooklyn Vegan and John Dwyer, and he hosts KEXP's weekly Bay Area music spotlight show, Vinelands.
Opening the night is molto morbidi, the solo project of French frontwoman Swan Wisnia, formerly of Shadow Motel. Her work pulls from vocal and progressive pop, synth rock, early R'n'B, antediluvian electronica and shimmering avant rock, and she tags it as avant-pop, no wave, fake pop and new wave. She hails from Lille in France. Tracy Bryant also appears on the bill.
Between the two, the night runs across a wide stretch of pop: Stoltz's psych-tinged garage and 60s-inflected melodies on one end, and Wisnia's no-wave and avant-pop on the other. It's a bill that leans into the more eccentric, self-recorded side of things, with Stoltz's DIY approach and Wisnia's wide-ranging references both at the core.
