Illustrated concert in which writer and illustrator James Mayhew narrates a story and draws it live on an easel, with music, a book signing and questions.
James Mayhew is at The Assembly House on Wednesday 28 October, as part of the Norwich Book Festival. He's a writer and illustrator, and the evening is built around his 'illustrated concert' format, which is a bit different from your usual reading.
It starts with an interview about the importance of childhood reading, and from there Mayhew settles into the main act: he narrates a story and draws it live on an easel in front of the audience, with a violinist and a pianist accompanying him. The music runs alongside the storytelling and the drawing, so you're watching the images appear as the story unfolds. It's described as highly educational, critically acclaimed and enormous fun, and the night closes with questions and a book signing.
On the music side, he's joined by violinist Caroline Speca and pianist Will Fergusson. The whole thing is presented by The Book Hive in partnership with The Norfolk Reading Project, a charity that since 2015 has trained over 400 volunteers to support children's reading across more than 50 primary schools in the county. All ticket proceeds go to the charity, and the Assembly House Trust is providing the venue for the night.

Doors open at 6:30pm, with the show starting at 7:00pm and running for about an hour. Tickets are £12 for adults and £2 for children, and free for TNRP volunteers. If you're bringing the kids, the book signing at the end is a good chance to get something signed while you're there.
