Free guided walk led by Urban Nature Reserve Manager Matt Wickens through Sweet Briar Marshes, exploring the River Wensum.
Norfolk Wildlife Trust are leading a guided walk through Sweet Briar Marshes on Thursday 29 October, starting at 10:00. It's led by Matt Wickens, the Urban Nature Reserve Manager, who'll be showing how the River Wensum shapes this wild corner of the city.
It's a good chance to get a bit of context on the river itself. The Wensum is the water Norwich was founded on, and in the Middle Ages, stone from Caen in Normandy was carried along it to build Norwich Cathedral and Norwich Castle. Cow Tower rose on its banks as part of the city's defences. Today it's recognised as one of the world's rare chalk rivers — a habitat found in only around 200 places globally, with 85% of them in England. Its upstream reaches were designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1993 and support kingfishers, otters and water voles.
The walk is part of Where the River Meets Us, a festival running from Monday 26 to Saturday 31 October, with six days of activities across riverside and neighbourhood locations around the city. It's delivered with support from the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, The Broads Authority, the National Centre for Writing and Norwich Tales and Trails, with artwork by local illustrator Trish Fried Rice.
