35mm screening of Mamoru Oshii's 1995 cyberpunk anime 'Ghost in the Shell', presented by the Norwich Film Festival in collaboration with the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.
Ghost in the Shell is coming to Cinema City on Monday 9 November, as part of the Norwich Film Festival. It's a 35mm screening of Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film, presented in collaboration with the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia. The print is an English-dubbed version from the film's original international release, so it's the same one that first brought it to audiences outside Japan.
Based on Masamune Shirow's cyberpunk manga, the story is set in 2029 and follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg government agent working for Section 9. She and her team are hunting the Puppet Master, a hacker capable of infiltrating human minds. It's a landmark of Japanese animation, and its influence has been felt across decades of science-fiction filmmaking. The screening brings together spectacular action, extraordinary hand-drawn animation, and a hauntingly atmospheric world.
The night is part of the Norwich Film Festival's celebration of the magic of film itself. The festival was founded in 2009 and is a BAFTA- and BIFA-qualifying short film festival that has launched films winning BAFTAs, Oscars, and awards at Sundance, Tribeca, and South by Southwest. This particular screening is presented in collaboration with the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.
