Growing Theatre presents Sean Carney's new take on the classic tale, set aboard the Demeter on its final voyage to England.
Growing Theatre brings Dracula: The Last Voyage of the Demeter to The Maddermarket Theatre on Thursday 22 October, a new take on the classic tale written by Sean Carney. It's not the Dracula you'll remember from the novels or the old films; this one stays on the ship.
The story follows the Demeter as it leaves Romania on its final voyage to England, loaded with cargo and passengers seeking a new life. But Captain Atkins has discovered a monster locked in the brig, and as the ship pushes further into open water with no sign of land, discontent spreads like a plague among the crew. The question that drives the play is who you can trust when things start to go wrong.
It's billed as a new take on the story by Sean Carney, and the focus is on the claustrophobia of the voyage rather than the Gothic castles of the original. The Demeter becomes the whole world of the play, and the tension comes from the passengers and crew trapped on board with whatever is in the brig.
