A satirical one-man show following a homeschooled matinee idol navigating the modern-day dystopian present.
Troy Hawke is playing O2 City Hall on Saturday 21 November, his first Newcastle date since his last world tour sold out. He's touring with Never Stop, Never Change!, a show that follows a homeschooled matinee idol who's emerged into a modern-day dystopian present with the naivety of a newborn fawn. The hour is built around angry security guards, barked compliments and crossed wires as he navigates conversational minefields both online and in real life.
It's a character piece, and the comedy comes from that gap between how he sees the world and how it actually works. Chortle called it a 'riotously funny hour' and 'undeniably funny', while BroadwayBaby described it as 'intelligent and effective satire' by a 'character of real comic integrity'. If you've seen him before, you'll know the persona he works from—the poised, slightly out-of-time presence—and this show puts him right in the middle of the friction that comes when that world meets ours.
The set runs for an hour, and the whole thing is built on the character's interactions with the modern world around him. It's a night of satire and character comedy rather than a stand-up set in the traditional sense, so the focus is as much on the persona as it is on the jokes.
