New production of Jim Cartwright's modern classic, directed by Robert Hastie, at Theatre Royal, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Rise and Fall of Little Voice comes to Theatre Royal from Wednesday 3 to Saturday 6 February 2027, a new production of Jim Cartwright's modern classic directed by Robert Hastie. It's a joyful, tender and bittersweet celebration of music, ambition and the courage it takes to be heard, and it follows a girl who fills her small bedroom with pitch-perfect renditions of her late father's record collection of the great divas, from Judy Garland to Billie Holiday. When her mother Mari's latest fling, local wheeler-dealer Ray, hears her sing, he's certain he's struck gold.
Francesca Mills takes the title role of Little Voice, with Jill Halfpenny as Mari Hoff and Paul Chuckle as Mr Boo. The production is part of the National Theatre's new 'National Theatre Nationwide' network, a partnership with theatres across all nine English regions to tour National Theatre productions direct from London with the original cast, supported by Arts Council England. Cartwright is one of England's greatest living playwrights, and he's long championed stories rooted in the North of England.
