Photographic exhibition at Segedunum Roman Fort showing the roads, buildings and houses that were built over the Roman fort and its bathhouse.
Streets Above is now on at Segedunum Roman Fort, the Roman fort, baths and museum in Wallsend. It's an exhibition that stays put for a while, so there's no rush to catch it over a single weekend.
The whole thing is built around a selection of photographs showing the roads, buildings and terraced houses that were constructed right over the top of Segedunum Roman Fort, its bathhouse and the surrounding area. It's a strange, layered bit of local history: the neighbourhood you see today sits on the ground where the fort once stood, and these photos pull back the surface to show what was there before.
If you've spent any time around Wallsend, you know the area, but you probably don't think of it as being built on top of a Roman fort. That's the thing the exhibition gets at — the way the everyday streets and terraced houses of the town are layered over the ruins of the fort and its baths. It's a look at the ground the neighbourhood now stands on, and the things that were there long before the houses were put up.
