Exhibition showcasing postgraduate research from Newcastle University through illustrated artworks and interactive activities, curated by PhD researchers Phoebe Lewis and Ainsley Hatt.
Picture This: Someone Like Me is running at the Great North Museum: Hancock on Barras Bridge, from 13 March 2026 to 17 January 2027. You'll find it in the Living Planet gallery on the ground floor, so it's easy to stumble across if you're already in the museum. It's a long run, too — nearly a year — so there's plenty of time to fit it in.
The exhibition takes postgraduate research from Newcastle University and turns it into illustrated artworks. It grew out of a series of workshops led by infohackit, which introduced researchers to design and visual storytelling and showed them how to make their own research graphics using Affinity by Canva. PhD researchers Phoebe Lewis and Ainsley Hatt curated the show, bringing together scientists and scholars from very different disciplines to communicate their work visually. The result is a collection of research that's been translated into something you can actually look at and get your head around, rather than reading it in a paper.
It's not just a static display, either. The project is accompanied by a series of student-led outreach events throughout the year, including interactive sessions, family-friendly activities and chances to meet the researchers themselves. So if you're curious about the work behind the pictures, you can actually hear it from the people who did it.
