A 60-minute immersive storytelling ghost tour with after-hours access to the historic Castle Keep, featuring costumed guides and night views.
Newcastle Castle is running ghost tours from 29 to 31 October, with each one lasting an hour and starting at 5:00pm. It's a 60-minute immersive storytelling tour that takes you inside the Keep after hours, when the castle is closed to the general public.
Most of us know the Keep as one of the city's oldest landmarks—a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument that's over 800 years old. Between the 16th and 18th centuries it served as a prison, and later fell into disrepair before being restored in the early 19th century. The Keep and the Gatehouse are the only surviving buildings of the original fortification, refurbished and reopened as Newcastle Castle through the Heart of the City Partnership. These tours take you behind those ancient walls for a storytelling experience of grim history, ghostly tales and dark deeds.
Costumed guides lead small groups through the very places where history happened, recounting some 2,000 years of stories about prisoners, punishments and past crimes. You'll climb to the top of the Keep for night views across the city, and there's a pop-up shop afterwards with Halloween treats and castle souvenirs. It's a good way to see the Keep when it's usually shut, and the stories are tied to the actual rooms you're standing in.
