A-League Men football match between Wellington Phoenix and Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Wellington Phoenix take on the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday 17 April, another A-League Men clash in the city. It's the Jets on home turf for this one, and the match is part of the regular season run.
If you've spent any time around the ground, you know the place. McDonald Jones Stadium is a 30,000-capacity rectangular stadium that's been a Newcastle fixture since Queen Elizabeth II opened it on 10 April 1970. It's the home ground for both the Newcastle Knights of the NRL and the Newcastle Jets of the A-League, so it's a spot that sees plenty of action across two codes. Over the years it's gone by a few different names — Marathon Stadium from 1992 to 2001, EnergyAustralia Stadium from 2001 to 2011, Ausgrid Stadium from 2011 to 2012, and Newcastle Stadium — and it went through a major redevelopment that finished with the Western Grandstand in 2011.
The biggest crowds usually come for the big games. It hosted the 2008 A-League Grand Final, four fixtures of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup — including a Socceroos semi-final — and the 2017 NRL All Stars match. Its record attendance of 32,890 was set during a 2011 Rugby League Test, so it's well-equipped for a proper crowd when the match is on.
