A creative club for writers, artists and DIY publishers to celebrate zine culture through writing, art and publishing, with all materials provided by the library.
The Zine Club runs at Newcastle City Library on the second Thursday of the month, from 12 February to 10 December 2026. That's eleven sessions across the year, each one from 5:30 to 7:30pm, so it's a regular thing you can drop into rather than a one-off. It's open to everyone aged 16 and over, and it's free, though you'll need to book ahead.
The club brings together writers, artists and DIY publishers to celebrate zine culture in Newcastle, blending writing, art, collage and DIY publishing as a platform for creative expression. The sessions are self-directed and peer-led, with support from community-engagement artist Nina Katzmarski. All the supplies and materials are provided by the library, though you're welcome to bring your own if you have a particular stash you prefer. Part of each session is dedicated to folding zines to distribute to the Zine Street libraries around the city.
That street library side of things is part of The Zine Project, a grassroots initiative that installs Zine Boxes — small outdoor cabinets purpose-built by a local Men's Shed — across Newcastle to encourage a love of zines and inspire people to create their own publications. The project was supported by the City of Newcastle through a Quick Response Grant in 2022.
