A world premiere jazz ballet reimagining F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic, blending ballet, tap and jazz with a score by Gershwin, James P. Johnson and new works.
The Great Gatsby: A Jazz Ballet Odyssey opens at the Civic Theatre in Newcastle on 22 August, with performances running through to 23 August. It's a world premiere, a reimagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel as a full theatrical production. The story is set in the roaring twenties, where the champagne flows, the jazz is hot and the party never ends.
Directed and choreographed by Joel Burke, the show blends ballet, tap and jazz. The score pulls from the era's big names: Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and James P. Johnson's The Charleston sit alongside new works by Emmy award-winning Jason Fernandez and Dominic Cabusi. On stage, world-class dancers carry the story through dazzling costumes and towering sets, with the glitz of the original tale kept front and centre. The production is presented by BIG Live in association with United Airlines.
