Indie-soul act Skinny Living, fronted by Ryan Johnston, plays the King Street Hotel.
Skinny Living play the King Street Hotel on Sunday 25 October, starting at 7:00 pm. They're an indie-soul act fronted by Wakefield native Ryan Johnston, with Danny Hepworth on guitar. The sound they've built sits somewhere between soul, indie and a bit of modern grit, carried by two acoustic guitars and Johnston's vocal harmonies. It's a stripped-back setup that lets the singing take centre stage.
They've been open about where the music comes from, citing Bill Withers, Van Morrison, The Isley Brothers and Bobby Caldwell as influences. You can hear those soul and R&B roots in the vocal phrasing and the way they lean into the groove, even with just the acoustic guitars doing the heavy lifting. The name 'Skinny Living' comes from the financial reality and lifestyle of the working class, a nod to the world they're writing from.
Their debut album, Day by Day, came out on 11 October 2024 and went on to reach UK No.1 Independent Album, so this show falls well into its touring cycle. It's a good time to catch them live if you've spent the last year getting to know the record.
