A hands-on workshop where participants learn to weave seams and hems from old jeans into new garments and homewares, with all materials provided.
Newcastle Museum is running a ReFashion Lab: Jeans Seams Weaving Workshop on Saturday 12 September, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. It's a three-hour session that looks at the creative potential of old jeans, specifically the seams and hems that usually get thrown away.
The whole point is to take those seams and hems and weave them into something new. You'll learn two different techniques to create a new fabric from them, which you can then add to a pair of jeans or another piece of clothing, or turn into something entirely separate, like a drink coaster. The best part is that you don't need a weaving loom to do it—the technique works without one, so it's something you can actually keep doing at home after the workshop is over.
No experience is needed, and all the materials are provided on the day, though you're more than welcome to bring along some old jeans of your own to cut up. The session is run by the museum with support from Create NSW, and bookings are essential, so you'll need to secure your spot in advance rather than just turning up. Upcycle Newcastle used this same technique to make two garments for the ReFashionista 2025 event at the museum, and those pieces will be on display during the workshop, so you can see exactly what the process can produce.
