Newcastle Surf Nights takes to the harbour on Friday 31 July, with a special film premiere aboard the MV Calmer. It's a collaboration between Freestyle Cinema and All Event Cruises, and the whole thing is built around the city's long history with surfing.
The main event is the premiere of Cooked, a Newcastle surf film featuring Craig Anderson, Jordy Smith, Ryan Callanan, Connor O'Leary, Ellie Lambkin and Lewie Dunne. Alongside that, they'll be showing rare archival footage of surfing in Newcastle Harbour, paired with stories of the waves and the characters that helped shape the city's surfing culture. It's a bit of a double bill, then: a new local film and a look back at the harbour's own surfing past.
The setting is part of the draw. The MV Calmer is described as Newcastle Harbour's premier super-yacht, and the cruise runs for two and a half hours, so you'll be out on the water as the golden hour hits. There are licensed bars and an onboard kitchen, so you can grab a drink and a bite while the film plays. The whole night is framed as a tribute to Newcastle's deep connection with surfing and to the local legends who keep inspiring the next generation.
