Tower Cinemas is screening Acropolis Cats & Other Wondrous Animals on Tuesday 27 October, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, as part of the GFF26. The documentary is followed by a live Q&A with the filmmaker, Mary Zournazi, who is also an academic at the University of Newcastle.
Zournazi, a Greek-Australian creator, follows the lives of stray cats in post-pandemic Athens and beyond. The film weighs the tenderness and the tragedies of human-animal relationships alongside questions of animal welfare, the environment and what freedom means in a rapidly changing world. It's a look at the cats themselves, but also at the people who look after them and the city they live in.
There's a second side to the night, too. Zournazi presents the film as a case study in public scholarship, showing how research can reach wider audiences through creative storytelling and how that storytelling can open up public discourse about social change. The Q&A gives you a chance to hear her talk through that process.
