Little Bang Discovery Club

Newcastle Museum is launching a new science club for the little ones, called the Little Bang Discovery Club, and it's built around play-based learning. It's aimed at preschoolers aged 3 to 5 and their carers, so it's one of those things you do with your kid rather than just dropping them off. The whole thing runs over four weeks, with sessions on Wednesdays 2, 9, 16 and 23 September 2026, from 10:15 to 11:15am each time. Each session is an hour long, and they build on each other, so the skills the kids pick up in the first week carry over into the next.

Across the four weeks, the children notice, sort, name, collect, compare, question and experiment. It's a very hands-on way of introducing science, and because it's play-based, it's more about exploring and asking questions than sitting through a lesson. The program is jointly funded by the Hunter Innovation Science Hub and the City of Newcastle, with Newcastle Museum supported by Create NSW.

It's held at the museum, 6 Workshop Way, Newcastle 2300. The cost is A$25 total per preschooler for all four sessions, and carers go free. Bookings are essential, and tickets are issued for children only, so you'll just need to book for your little one. With the sessions running on Wednesday mornings, it's a good mid-week activity to get them out of the house and into something they can really sink their teeth into.
