A school holiday workshop for children aged 5-12 to design their own personalised jersey inspired by Angela Tiatia's moving image work 'The Matildas'.
Kit Creators is running a school holiday workshop at the Newcastle Art Gallery from 6 to 9 October, with two sessions each day: 10.00am to 12.00pm and 1.00pm to 3.00pm. It's designed for kids aged 5 to 12, and the whole thing takes place in the gallery's Learning Studio.
The workshop draws on The Matildas, a moving image work by artist Angela Tiatia that's currently on tour from the National Portrait Gallery. The starting point is a plain shirt, which becomes a creative canvas for each child. From there, they're invited to think about what makes them unique and, at the same time, celebrate the feeling of belonging to a team. Using colours, patterns, symbols and images, they design their own wearable artwork that tells their personal story, with the gallery's art educators there to guide them through it. Every child goes home with their personalised jersey.
Your ticket covers the workshop and all the artmaking materials, and it also includes entry to the exhibition Angela Tiatia: Muse. If you're coming along, there's a discounted ticket available for parents to join the tour of the show. A few practical things to keep in mind: children must be signed in by an accompanying adult, who needs to stay onsite throughout the session. And just a heads-up for the parents — the exhibition includes some low-level nudity and endurance performance using the body.
