Friday Night Sounds ft. Tom Avgenicos and Delay 45

Tom Avgenicos and his quartet Delay 45 play the Newcastle Art Gallery on Friday 30 October, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. It's part of Friday Night Sounds, the Gallery's after-hours series that pairs live music and performance by local and national acts with whatever's currently on the walls. The series kicked off with local singer and songwriter Nina Romeru, a pop-up gin bar by Earp Distillery, and a 'wild' life drawing workshop by artist Ann Caddey, and it's been bringing people back to the venue since.

Avgenicos is a Newcastle-based trumpeter, composer and producer who's earned a fair bit of recognition across the country. He's a Freedman Jazz Fellowship recipient with eight albums to his name and several APRA Art Music Award nominations. When he's not playing, he lectures in Jazz Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and co-directs Monday Night Confessions. His music has been presented at the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Centre and MONA, as well as across Europe. Delay 45 is his jazz quartet, known for an adventurous and highly responsive style.

The night doesn't stop at the music. There's a Sketch Club drawing session running from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, and you'll need to book for that one. The whole evening also ties into the Gallery's wider 'worlding' project, which has reimagined its walls both literally and metaphorically.

Entry is free, and the music runs from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday 30 October at the Newcastle Art Gallery.
