A two-hour stop-motion workshop for children aged 5 to 12, inspired by Angela Tiatia's video work 'The Pearl', as part of the gallery's school holiday programme.
Newcastle Art Gallery is running a stop-motion workshop for kids this spring, called Clam, Camera, Action!. It runs from Tuesday 29 September to Friday 2 October, with sessions at 10am and 1pm, and it's aimed at children aged 5 to 12. Each session lasts two hours, so it's a good length for a morning or afternoon out during the school holidays.
The workshop is inspired by The Pearl, a video work by Sฤmoan/Australian artist Angela Tiatia, who's called Newcastle home for the last five years. It's part of the gallery's school holiday programme, which they build around local artists and their own hanging collections, and the session includes exhibition entry. The whole thing sits within the wider Angela Tiatia: Muse exhibition, a world-first survey that brings together more than two decades of her moving-image work, on show from 26 September 2026 to 7 February 2027. So, if you're bringing the kids along, you've got the rest of the show to wander through afterwards.
It's a stop-motion session, so the kids will be making their own short films frame by frame rather than just watching. The Clam, Camera, Action! title gives a fair hint of the theme, and the connection to The Pearl means there's a specific piece of art to look at for inspiration. If you've got kids in that 5 to 12 age bracket, it's a decent way to get them stuck into something creative over the break.
