New Annual - Muse: Angela Tiatia

Angela Tiatia returns to the Newcastle Art Gallery on 25 September with Muse, the first major survey of her work. It runs through to 4 October, so you've got a good window to get in and see it. Tiatia is a Sāmoan/Australian artist based right here in Newcastle, and Muse pulls together twenty years of her practice across video, photography and installation. It's billed as the largest presentation of her work to date.

For two decades, Tiatia has been looking at global power structures and how they land on Pasifika communities. She works across performance, moving image, painting, sculpture and photography to get at representation, gender, neo-colonialism and the commodification of body and place. Muse brings that together in one space, with the video, photography and installation taking centre stage. The exhibition is described as a poetic look at climate, capitalism and colonisation, and it's built around the same themes she's been returning to for twenty years.

If you've followed her work, this is the first time you'll see that much of it in one go. It's a survey in the proper sense: a broad look across two decades of work rather than a single new project. The gallery is at 1 Laman St, Cooks Hill, and the exhibition runs from 25 September to 4 October.
