Free writing club for children aged 5-15 to experiment with words and build writing skills at Newcastle City Library.
Atlas Young Writers Club is running at Newcastle City Library this term, with sessions on Wednesday 21 October, 4 November, 18 November and 2 December, all from 4pm to 5pm. It's for kids aged 5 to 15, and the whole thing is free.
The club is part of Atlas, a State Library of NSW initiative that's about encouraging curiosity, creativity and confidence in children through hands-on sessions with experienced professionals. It's supported by the John B Foundation. At Newcastle City Library, it runs alongside the Atlas Art Club and Book Lovers Club, so there's a bit of a creative hub going on. The Young Writers Club invites kids to be inspired by the library's collections, experiment with words and become part of a creative community.

No previous experience is needed and all the equipment is provided, so you don't need to bring anything along. Participants work with library staff and a professional facilitator, and they connect with other Atlas Club members across the state via Zoom, which adds a bit of a wider community feel to the local sessions. For children aged 12 and under, a parent or guardian must stay in the library; for those under 16, you'll need to provide parent or guardian contact details when you book. Bookings are essential, and the sessions run on Wednesdays 21 October, 4 November, 18 November and 2 December, 4-5pm, at Newcastle City Library, 15 Laman Street, Newcastle 2300. It's free.
