A book lovers club for children aged 5 to 15 to meet Australian authors and discuss favourite books in a casual, spoiler-free environment.
Samera Kamaleddine is coming to the Newcastle City Library on Tuesday 8 September, from 4 to 5pm, as part of the Atlas Book Lovers Club. She'll be talking about The Clueless Guide to Solving a Mystery, and the whole thing is free, though you'll need to book ahead.
If you're not familiar with the Atlas program, it's a State Library of NSW initiative for kids aged 5 to 15, and the Book Lovers Club is one of its branches. The setup is a bit different from your usual book club: there are no reading lists to keep up with, just conversation about favourite books and the chance to meet Australian authors and ask them whatever you've always wanted to know about life as a writer. The sessions are spoiler-free, so you don't have to worry about ruining a story for someone who hasn't finished it yet.
Beyond the Book Lovers Club, Atlas also runs Art Club and Young Writers Club sessions. During these, kids interact with library staff and other children in the library, and they connect with Atlas Club members across the state via Zoom. The program is supported by the John B Foundation.

Kamaleddine's session is the second of two this year; Karen Wasson spoke about her graphic novel Inked on 28 July. Both run from 4 to 5pm at the library on 15 Laman Street, Newcastle. For kids 12 and under, a parent or guardian needs to stay in the library; for anyone under 16, you'll need to provide parent or guardian contact details when you book. It's free, but bookings are essential.
