Masterclass with A.A.Murakami exploring the intersection of art, science and innovation, held during the 'New Spring' exhibition.
A.A.Murakami are holding a masterclass at the Newcastle Art Gallery on Sunday 18 October, from 1.00pm to 2.30pm. It's an artist talk that sits alongside their current exhibition, New Spring, so you can see the work and then hear from the people who made it in the same afternoon.
A.A.Murakami is the artist duo of Azusa Murakami and Alexander Groves, who live and work between Japan and England. They're known for what they call 'ephemeral technology' installations — immersive works where machines conjure fleeting natural phenomena. New Spring is a multisensory piece in which thousands of mist-filled bubbles bloom and fall like flowers from tree-like sculptures. They've designed it to evoke mono no aware, the Japanese term for the complex feelings of sadness and joy that come with realising life's fleeting nature.
Beyond the gallery, the pair run Studio Swine, an experimental design practice. Their work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Vitra Design Museum, and M+ in Hong Kong. The masterclass is a chance to hear them talk through their process and the thinking behind the work while New Spring is still on display.
