Runners create a protest typeface inspired by voting, drawing on the process behind the 'Stop Killing Black People' typeface, with dinner and art supplies.
Blackbird Revolt is hosting Your Vote, Your Voice, a protest type workshop led by their creative director, Dr. Terresa Hardaway, on Monday, October 26, from 6 PM to 8 PM. It's a hands-on session where you'll create your own protest type inspired by voting, and the whole thing is built around the Stop Killing Black People typeface.
If you're not familiar with it, Stop Killing Black People is an award-winning font that grew out of the movement it names. Hardaway will walk you through the process behind it, and you'll use that as a starting point to build your own letters. The idea is to explore how bold typography can amplify a message—in this case, one around voting—and how the way a word looks can change how it's heard. You'll be working with the SKBP font as a reference, so you'll get a sense of how a specific visual style can carry a political weight of its own.
It's not just a lecture; you'll be making your own work throughout the night. The session is part of Blackbird Revolt's Arts & Culture Vibrant Storefront, which is funded by the City of Minneapolis Arts & Cultural Affairs Department. That means it's one of the city-supported programs popping up around town this year.
