Tina Schlieske celebrates her 60th birthday with a concert of rock anthems and jazz torch standards at The Dakota.
Tina Schlieske is back at The Dakota on Sunday, November 8, for a show that doubles as her 60th birthday celebration. She's calling it The Standards, My Way, and the title points to what she's planning: a set that pulls from the different eras of her career rather than sticking to one sound.
If you've followed her for a while, you know the two sides of her work. For four decades, she's fronted the Twin Cities band Tina and the B-Sides, and that's where the raucous rock-and-roll anthems come from. More recently, she's moved into jazz, with the 2024 album The Good Life on Shifting Paradigm Records. This show is meant to bridge those two worlds, moving from the loud, high-energy rock that built her reputation to the sultry, late-night swing and torch standards of her jazz era. She'll be backed by an ensemble of musicians, so it's a full band night.
Schlieske was born and raised in the Midwest and is now based on the West Coast, but she's still a Minneapolis rock and soul icon. The Star Tribune once called her "one of the most potent singers to ever come out of the Twin Cities," and that voice is the common thread here, whether she's leaning into the rock side or the jazz side. The set is a look through her deep catalog, so you'll hear the older material alongside the newer stuff.
