Grammy-winning hip-hop group Arrested Development plays The Dakota on Nicollet Mall.
Arrested Development play The Dakota on Friday, November 6, at 7 PM. The Atlanta group has spent more than 23 years on freedom and spiritual evolution, and they describe their sound as "Life Music."
They're a Grammy-winning act with over five million albums sold. In 1993, they picked up two Grammys—Best New Artist and Best Rap Single—following the success of "Tennessee," which won an MTV award for best rap single, and "People Everyday," named best music video in 1992. Their discography is anchored by the landmark album 3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life of... and singles like "Mr. Wendal" and "Revolution."
There's a long history of activism behind the music, too. They donated half of all royalties from "Mr. Wendal" to the National Coalition for the Homeless, were the first African-American act to donate to Nelson Mandela and the ANC, and gave $20,000 to UNICEF for relief in Sudan after winning as audience favorite on NBC's Hit Me Baby One More Time in 2005. Their sound sits alongside that of De La Soul, Digable Planets, Yasiin Bey and A Tribe Called Quest.
