Tina Schlieske, former singer of Tina and the B-Sides, celebrates her 60th birthday with a rock, soul and jazz retrospective of her career.
Tina Schlieske is returning to The Dakota on Saturday, November 7, for a show titled Tina Turns 60 - The Retrospective & Beyond. It's a birthday celebration that doubles as a look back over her career, with a set that pulls from rock, soul, and jazz.
If you've followed the Twin Cities scene for a while, you know the name. Schlieske fronted the Americana-rock band Tina and the B-Sides for nearly four decades, and the Star Tribune once called her one of the most potent singers to ever come out of the Twin Cities. She's a child of Lithuanian immigrants, born and raised in the Midwest, and though she's based on the West Coast now, this is a homecoming of sorts. The B-Sides went on hiatus in 1999, and she returned to front them in 2009, later releasing A-Sides: The Best Of TBS.
There's a fair amount of ground to cover between those B-Sides years. In 1996, she signed with Sire Records and shared stages with Lenny Kravitz, The Wallflowers, the Indigo Girls, and Etta James. Paramount even asked her to play Janis Joplin in Piece of My Heart. After the B-Sides first stepped back, she toured with Double Trouble—Stevie Ray Vaughan's band—and put out the solo album Slow Burn in 2005, which featured Elvis Presley's guitarist James Burton. Since then, she's worked her way through jazz, classic R&B, punk, and more, and this retrospective is meant to pull from those different eras.
