The classic Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway musical The Sound of Music, directed by Jack O'Brien, presented by Hennepin Arts.
The Sound of Music opens at the Orpheum Theatre on Tuesday, October 20, and runs through Sunday, October 25. It's a North American tour presented by Hennepin Arts in partnership with Broadway Across America - Minneapolis, and it's a Rodgers & Hammerstein classic that's been a Hennepin Arts favorite for 65 years. The 1965 Oscar-winning film recently celebrated its 60th anniversary as one of the most successful movie musicals of all time, so if you've only known the story through the screen, this is a chance to see it on stage.
This production is directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, who also did Hairspray. The book is by Howard Lindsay, Maria Augusta Trapp, Oscar Hammerstein II, Richard Rodgers and Russel Crouse, and the score features the songs most of us recognize: "Do-Re-Mi," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" and "Edelweiss." It's recommended for ages 7 and up, so it works as a family outing.
There are a few things to keep in mind before you go. The show includes depictions of Nazi iconography and references, as well as flashing lights. If you need accessibility support, GalaPro's mobile app provides personalized closed captioning and audio description, with captioning available in several languages. The run time is 2 hours and 40 minutes, which includes an intermission.
