The High 48s mark 20 years of modern bluegrass with a show featuring current and founding members playing songs from each of the band's lineups.
The High 48s are celebrating 20 years of modern bluegrass at The Parkway Theater on Friday, November 20. It's a full-circle kind of night: the current lineup will be joined on stage by founding members Chad and Derek Johnson (now of Monroe Crossing), Marty Marrone (Special Consensus, Lake Monsters), and Mike Hedding (Kind Country, Pistol Whippin' Party Penguins). Together, they'll play songs from each lineup the band has run through since they started.
That's a lot of ground to cover. Since their first practice in a northeast Minneapolis duplex in 2006, the group has gone through nine members and five different lineups. This show brings every one of them back together to run through the songbook. If you've followed them since the beginning, you'll hear the early stuff; if you're newer, you'll get the current sound alongside the older versions that led up to it.
They describe their approach as combining the soulful sound of classic bluegrass with a modern attitude, writing as northern city folk rather than as an imagined 'sweet, sunny south.' It's that same thread that's run through all five lineups over two decades. The show is all ages, so it works whether you're bringing the kids or just coming on your own.
