Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling brings his personal Christmas concert 'The Beautiful Day' to The Dakota.
Kurt Elling brings The Beautiful Day to The Dakota on Thursday, December 3, with two showtimes: 7 PM and 9 PM. It's his own take on Christmas, and he's been bringing it back for the holiday season for a few years now.
If you're not familiar with the name, Elling is a two-time Grammy winner and seventeen-time nominee, called "the standout male vocalist of our time" by The New York Times. He held the top spot in the DownBeat Critics Poll for fourteen years running, and he's also made a Broadway debut as Hermes in the Tony Award-winning musical Hadestown. He's a jazz singer by trade, but The Beautiful Day isn't a standard swingin' jazzy Christmas.
The show reimagines the sounds of the season, mixing traditional carols in fresh arrangements with unexpected songs and rediscovered treasures. Elling has talked about what he was after with the project: he didn't want to make a "religious" record or a standard jazz holiday set, but rather to expand his consciousness and embrace the goodness of the season. That's the spirit that carries through the set—the carols you know, but not quite how you remember them, sitting alongside songs you might not expect to hear in a holiday program.
