Two shows by the pop duo Sylvan Esso, with special guest papa mbye, at First Avenue in Minneapolis.
Sylvan Esso play two nights at First Avenue on Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24. The Friday show features special guest papa mbye opening for them. Both are in the Mainroom.
Sylvan Esso is the pop duo of Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn, based in Durham, North Carolina. They started in 2012 when Meath, sitting in a Wisconsin deli, told Sanborn she wanted to start a pop band: she would write and sing the emotionally multivalent songs, and he would make the beats. Over the years their roles have become so intertwined that every new song feels both rigorously conceptual and completely rapturous, a tension that frames their third album, Free Love. Meath has said they aim to make pop songs that aren't on the radio because they're too weird.
Their latest album, Ow, is described as a trust fall — messy, hellish and free, a scotch-tape collage of memories and Y2K-era ephemera. The shows are presented with PLUS1, so that $1 per ticket supports organizations working for equity, access and dignity. First Avenue has been the epicenter of live music in Minneapolis since 1970.
