Guided 'Stop & Chat' tour led by a Mia guide through the exhibition 'Take the Picture!', which explores different kinds of portraiture.
The Minneapolis Institute of Art is hosting a Stop & Chat session on Tuesday, October 20, at 11 AM, centered on the exhibition Take the Picture!. It's part of the museum's regular program of public tours led by Mia guides through the permanent collection and the galleries, so if you've ever wanted a bit more context before you wander off on your own, this is a good way to get it.
Take the Picture! is on view in the Harrison Photography Gallery from August 22, 2026, to February 28, 2027. The show draws mostly from the museum's own photography collection, pulling from across the medium's history to look at different kinds of portraiture. It hangs works where performance, collaboration, and experimentation are central right alongside others where chance proves pivotal, so you'll see a fair range of how photographers approach the same basic task: putting a person in front of a lens.
The title comes from the 1957 film Funny Face, in which Audrey Hepburn tells Fred Astaire—whose character is based on the photographer Richard Avedon—"Take the picture! Take the picture!" It's a scene that turns on the relationship between the sitter and the photographer, and on catching the right moment, which is exactly what the exhibition is about. The Stop & Chat gives you a chance to hear a guide talk through those ideas in person rather than just reading the wall text.
