Guided 'Stop & Chat' session led by Mia guides through the exhibition 'Take the Picture!', which explores different types of portraiture in the museum's photography collection.
The Minneapolis Institute of Art is hosting a Stop & Chat session on Tuesday, October 27, at 11 AM, and this one centers on Take the Picture!, the photography exhibition currently running in the Harrison Photography Gallery. It's part of the museum's public tour program, where Mia guides lead visitors through the permanent collection and special exhibitions. The format is designed for two kinds of crowds: those who want an in-depth exploration and those who'd rather just have a casual conversation about what they're seeing.
Take the Picture! draws mostly from the museum's own photography collection and works across the medium's history to look at different kinds of portraiture. The gallery hangs works where performance, collaboration, and experimentation are central right alongside portraits where chance plays the biggest role in capturing a sitter's likeness. It's a broad way of looking at the portrait—not just as a record of a person, but as a result of how the photographer and the subject work together.
The title comes from a scene in the 1957 film Funny Face, in which Audrey Hepburn tells Fred Astaire, whose character is based on the photographer Richard Avedon, "Take the picture! Take the picture!" It's a line that gets to the heart of the sitter-photographer relationship and the question of when the moment is just right to actually press the shutter.
