Concert by the Los Angeles jazz and improvisation quintet SML, featuring bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann.
SML play The Cedar Cultural Center on Thursday, April 1, 2027. The quintet comes from Los Angeles, where they pull together players from the city's jazz, improvised, and indie scenes. The lineup is bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum, and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann.
They've put out three records since they started. Their debut, Small Medium Large, was recorded during the band's first gigs at the Highland Park venue ETA in late 2022 and early 2023, post-produced the following year, and released in the summer of 2024. It landed on 'Best of 2024' lists from Tone Glow, Passion of the Weiss, Bandcamp Daily, and Hearing Things. Their second album, HOW YOU BEEN, followed in late 2025. In the summer of 2026, they released Spontaneous Music Live, an album of two unedited sidelong improvisations recorded at Zebulon in LA.
Between those releases, the band spent some time in the East: in March 2026, they held a residency at the Big Ears Festival, playing six sets over three nights. This Minneapolis date is presented by The Cedar and Walker Art Center.
