A live-to-film presentation of Baz Luhrmann's 1996 film Romeo + Juliet, with the original soundtrack performed live by a 12-piece hybrid ensemble.
William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet Film in Concert comes to the State Theatre on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2027, at 7:30 PM. It's a live-to-film screening of Baz Luhrmann's 1996 Romeo + Juliet, which opened number one at the US box office and reimagined the tragedy as an MTV-era pop opera. Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio and Emmy winner Claire Danes star as the titular lovers.
The format is straightforward: the movie plays on a cinema screen with the original dialogue and action intact, while a 12-piece hybrid ensemble performs the score and soundtrack live in sync with the image. Atmospheric lighting and an immersive concert-stage production round out the room. The original soundtrack drew on 90s hits like Des'ree's "Kissing You," The Cardigans' "Lovefool," Radiohead's "Talk Show Host," Garbage's "#1 Crush," and Kym Mazelle's "Young Hearts Run Free."
