If you're not familiar with her, it's hard to pin her down to one sound. She's a vocalist, musician, songwriter, producer, actor, and narrator whose career has run for five decades, moving across rock, R&B, blues, pop, soul, and jazz. She first made a name for herself in 1979 with her self-titled debut, which produced the hit "Chuck E's In Love" and earned her the Grammy for Best New Artist. She picked up a second Grammy in 1992, Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female, for Pop Pop, and has eight other nominations to her name. VH1 ranked her number 30 on its 100 Greatest Women in Rock & Roll in 1999, and her album Pirates placed number 49 on NPR's list of the 150 Greatest Albums Made by Women. The New Yorker called her the "premiere song-stylist and songwriter of her generation," and fans know her as the "Duchess of Coolness."
