Red Thread and Ponyfolk present an alternative holiday celebration with winter songs, plus Triple Fiddle.
Red Thread and Ponyfolk are back at The Cedar Cultural Center on Friday, December 18, for an alternative holiday celebration they've titled Darkness and Dreams. Both are Minnesota-based ensembles that describe themselves as devoted to building community around Midwestern European roots music, and they're returning to The Cedar to share a program of winter songs—new and old—drawn from Scandinavian, Yiddish/Klezmer, Slavic, English, and Irish roots. The set focuses on themes of winter, luck, and family, so it's more of a seasonal gathering than a traditional holiday concert.
Joining them is Triple Fiddle, a string ensemble known for three-part fiddle harmonies, layered vocals, and an eclectic mix of bluegrass, honkytonk, western swing, and Scandinavian folk. Between the two main acts and the opening set, the night pulls from a wide stretch of folk traditions—Scandinavian and Slavic roots from Red Thread and Ponyfolk, and the bluegrass and western swing of Triple Fiddle.
