Solo guitar program by Raphael RogiĆski, with Tim Sparks and Ben Abrahamson, blending John Coltrane music with Langston Hughes's poetry.
Raphael RogiĆski plays Berlin on Wednesday, October 28, with a program that puts two very different influences on the same stage: the saxophone work of John Coltrane and the poetry of Langston Hughes. It's a solo guitar show, so you'll hear RogiĆski working through both on his own.
The first half of the set is built around reinterpretations of Coltrane. Taking a saxophonist's lines and translating them for the guitar is a specific kind of challenge, and that's where the focus lies. The second half shifts to musical reflections on the poetry of Langston Hughes, so the evening moves from jazz standards to something more literary.
He won't be entirely alone on stage, though. RogiĆski is joined by Tim Sparks and Ben Abrahamson, so while the core of the program is his solo guitar work, there's more to the lineup than just one person. It's a particular pairingâColtrane and Hughesâthat you don't run into every day, and hearing them both on guitar is the whole point of the night.
