Chicago trumpeter Marquis Hill and his Sweet Surrender Trio play the Berlin Jazz Club on the Midwest Jazz Collective tour, supporting his 2026 album 'Beautifulism' / 'Sweet Surrender'.
Marquis Hill brings his new EP Beautifulism (Sweet Surrender) to Berlin on Sunday, November 15. He's playing with his Sweet Surrender Trio: Hill on trumpet and electronics, Micah Collier on bass, and Jillian Upshaw on drums and electronics. The Minneapolis date is part of a 14-stop Midwest Jazz Collective tour across the region, combining ten concerts and four educational workshops.
Hill is a Chicagoan trumpeter and composer who came up through the city's jazz community to become a bandleader and recording artist. He won the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz competition in the fall of 2014 and topped the 'Rising Star - Trumpet' category in DownBeat's 2016 Critics Poll. Since then, he's supported or guested with Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Boney James, Kurt Elling, Joe Lovano, and Makaya McCraven. His music works across bop, hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house, and neo-soul, built around lyrical trumpet playing, rhythmic depth, and expansive improvisation. The Sweet Surrender Trio reimagines that sound as an intimate, highly interactive ensemble. The show supports Beautifulism / Sweet Surrender, released this year on his own Black Unlimited Music Group imprint.
