Rachel Ries kicks off her fall residency at Icehouse on Sunday, November 8, performing with a Kith + Kin Ensemble. The show is titled For Choir Nerds, With Love, and it's the first of a residency that runs through December 3. The set draws on the last nine years of her work with the chorus, mixing her favorite choral arrangements with harmony-heavy songs from her own harmonic origin story. The audience is invited to come prepared to sing along.
If you're not familiar with the name, Ries is the voice behind Her Crooked Heart and the choral arranging mastermind behind Kith + Kin Chorus, the community choir she founded nine years ago. She's released several records and toured around the world, but she also builds a tiny home on wheels. In her downtime, she enjoys being an auntie, thinking in eight-part harmony, writing songs for patrons, and honing her Portuguese egg tart baking skills.
This particular show is built around that choral side of her work. The Kith + Kin Ensemble provides the voices, and the program pulls from the nearly decade of arranging she's done with the chorus. It's a look back at where her love for harmony started, and the invitation to sing along makes it more of a shared experience than a standard concert. If you've followed her work over the years, this is a good place to see those choral threads brought to the front.
