French theatre-maker Philippe Quesne's play, a sequel to L'Effet de Serge, about a group of friends who try to build an art gallery, with poetry by Laura Vazquez.
Philippe Quesne brings Le Paradoxe de John to the McGuire Theater at the Walker Art Center from February 4 to 6, 2027, with performances starting at 7:30 PM. It's a sequel to L'Effet de Serge, which the Walker staged back in 2011, and it picks up where that one left off, asking what art and community actually mean in everyday life.
The play follows a group of friends whose attempt to build an art gallery spirals into a strange series of experiments. Among them are insulation-foam headwear and a prolonged exchange with linoleum flooring, all carried along an oddly serene sense of dissociation. Running across several digital ticker displays throughout the show is poetry by Laura Vazquez, whose texts provide a constant, written counterpoint to the action on stage.
Quesne is a French theater-maker who works in the tender space between humor and melancholy, and Le Paradoxe de John fits right into that. One critic described it as "a piece of wild, melancholic poetry, served by Laura Vazquez's sumptuous texts, a flawless troupe, and an impeccable visual sense... flowing tranquilly along the path of tender absurdity."

It's the third of four performances in the Walker's Out There 2027 series of experimental art, so it's part of a larger run of work the center is bringing in that winter. Tickets start at $25, and the show runs February 4 through 6, with each performance starting at 7:30 PM at the McGuire Theater.
