Jazz septet led by former Minnesota Orchestra timpanist Peter Kogan, pairing his own compositions with Duke Ellington classics.
Peter Kogan's Monsterful Wonderband plays The Dunsmore Jazz Room on Thursday, October 29, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. The set pairs Kogan's own compositions with a selection of Duke Ellington classics, and the band is a septet built around three horns, guitar, and rhythm.
Kogan leads from the drums. The rest of the lineup includes Ryan Garnoe, Nick Syman, Peter Whitman, Geoff LeCrone, Cameron Markworth, and Tommy Barbarella. The name itself comes from the title track of his second CD, Some Monsterful Wonderthing, which he describes as a sardonic nod to the Richard Rogers tune "Something Wonderful."
Kogan has a long history in the city. He was Principal Timpanist of The Minnesota Orchestra from 1986 to 2015, and before that, he played jazz, rock, and blues in New York City. He's backed blues masters like Lightnin' Hopkins, Floyd Jones, and Honeyboy Edwards, appeared with the Larry Elgart Big Band, and released four CDs, including Just Before Midnight. Since September 2022, the MetroNOME Brewery has hosted monthly "PeterKoganJazzPresents" led by him.
